"Change your life today. Don't gamble on the future, act now, without delay" — Simone de Beauvoir
Not everyone likes change. After all, it’s certainly far easier in the short to keep things the way that they are. But in the long term this “business as usual” approach can cause more pain in our lives as the world around us moves forward and we’re left standing in the dust of inactivity!
It’s been said that failing to change as circumstances change is one of the primary reasons that people fail. Knowing that we tend to avoid change—even change that is good for us—it’s important to perhaps reframe this whole notion of change. Instead of change for the sake of change, and even instead of using the word “change,” let’s reframe it as “moving forward.” Let’s see it as moving closer to “what’s next” for us in this life adventure. In this way change becomes aligned with our life purpose; it becomes a welcomed visitor rather than as an uninvited guest.
What is one thing that you can add to you daily habits that will move you closer to the life you want to live? In a similar way, what is one thing that you can commit to stop doing that is not preparing you to be who you want to be? Our lives will never change for the better until we change something that we do every day. After all, people don’t decide their future; people decide their habits, and it’s their habits decide their future.
Once you decide on one something to add and something to take away from your life, commit to it. Really commit to it. Then take something else away and replace it with something positive. Commit to that. Then keep repeating this cycle until one day you wake up and realize you don’t need to wait anymore to be the person you want to be, because the person you want to be is who you are.
Once you are who you want to be, keep practicing and honing your character. You may surprise yourself and become even better than you imagined!
